Calling
"...for the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable." - Romans 11:29
What is a calling? Can anyone get one? Sometimes people struggle to understand what a calling is. It sounds so mystical and mysterious.
A calling is an invitation or summons to leave what we're doing to serve someone who needs us. It always involves feelings of inadequacy because it moves us out of our comfort zone. It always involves sacrifice, unselfishness, and commitment for us to use our talents, abilities, and life experiences to serve God and man. A calling of God is always an inner leading from Him that is consistent with God's Word in Scripture.
Can anybody be called?
Everybody is. For the highest calling in life is not to be a teacher or public servant, not to be a pastor or a doctor, but to be a Christian and follow Jesus in faith. It's a calling for life and for eternity that you don't want to miss.
Have you accepted life's highest calling?

It's nice to know that the most important calling on your life isn't necessarily the hardest to figure out. What a great devotion! - Micah
A "calling" on my life is what gets me up every morning. The enemy tries to rob the joy of "it" but when the calling is authentic, he cannot take that away. I am covinced that God and I will be victorious in whatever I choose to do in my "calling." - Margaret
Two things we know for sure: (1) We are placed on this Earth to serve God's purposes, and; (2) God gives each of a calling to do it.
Great article. Thanks for helping us to remember what is really important. - MW of Atl
I was reading in the first two chapters of the Gospel of Mark this morning and thinking about this devotion and considering how Jesus called, "Come, follow me" to those He chose to be disciples. This brings me to the question of election and the thought expressed in the devotion that everybody is called. I would like to have a better understanding of election. Could someone further elaborate on the concept? In Mark 2:17 it indicates Jesus calls those who recognize themselves to be sinners and I think the Holy Spirit convicts people of their sin but not all people are convicted. I personally feel convicted but I know others who do not. I guess it is just not yet God's timing that those are called? - Janice
Thanks for the reminder, that I can simply be me and not you. I think it is also important to recognize the individuality in calling. we may be called to work side-by-side, but the imputations may differ in presentaion and delivery; however his purpose is performed for his glory. The need is met and ministry has taken place. - carolyn
what if i accept Jesus as master - and I do - but are just too dense or stupid to hear God's calling for me? How does that affect my afterlife experience? - john
Janice, Dr. R.C. Sproul has done a wonderful audio series on election titled; "Called By God". It is available at his website www.ligonier.org. In my opinion, Dr. Sproul is one of the most important teachers of Reformed Theology alive today. Hope you get it and find it helpful. - Grant
Thank you, Grant, for your suggestion. I will look into getting that. As for my comment, it was one made the last time this devotion posted and not this morning on Aug.24, 2008. It is interesting to see what I was thinking and reading about back then. I had been concerned for the salvation of a dear friend and I found the Primitive Baptist doctrine of election comforting because from what I understood of it one could be saved and not even realize it because it was totally up to God and was in no way dependent upon the person making a choice. It was a way of being hopeful for my friend's salvation. Anyway, I got more information and decided to go with joining a Southern Baptist congregation which again according to my understanding believes that the Bible discusses both election and the need to tell or evangelize the Word and good news of Jesus so people can make a choice. I have come to recognize that I do have responsibilty to make sure my friend is aware of Jesus and what He can mean to her life but it is up to God in His timing and way to bring her to salvation. I look forward to hearing what Dr. Sproul has to say about the calling. - Janice
It is feeling of recieve gold from our savior for race the race which we are call by him. This example to calling I thank father for calling me serve him in my home and in public to share his calling with others who don't know him. With struggle and going through the fire is how we know him and where he wants us to be. By read his word keep us in contact with him. Thank you for your article it renewed my faith and calling to him. - Patricia
Janice, we are sorry about the repeat of your comment from August 24, 2007. It was just another glitch in the system, but now we know how to keep it from happening again! Thank you for your patience and, as always, for your insightful comments. - RFTH
