Waiting On God
"Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him..." - Psalm 37:7
I don't like to wait in long lines at restaurants, being stuck in traffic during rush hour, or being put on hold by a computer. Waiting is a waste of time. This is why waiting on God is so difficult for many believers. That's also why many people quote the verse that is not in the Bible, "God helps those who help themselves." That's American ideology, but it's not biblical.
The statement speaks to the lack of faith, how God needs us to take charge to get things done. But one thing's for sure: What we need to do is to trust God and be willing to do His will, in His timing, not our own, for the right action at the right time equals the right result.
Waiting on God is tough, but God's timing is always best for us and for others.

Thank you for this devotion. I have been in many debates over the phrase "God helps those who help themselves" many times and by Christians which has been more aggravating for me. It is nowhere to be found in the Bible at all. How can we pray to God for help, if we help ourselves anyway.
Thank you. - Judy
Judy,
This saying sounds real good but it is not in the Bible anywhere at all. We, that study the Bible will eventually find other sayings that are not in the Bible. Another one I like is "Cleanliness is next to Godliness". That helps to make someone clean up their mess but it is not in there either. One that I have heard all my life quoted by many Preachers is the one about the rope being tied around the High Priests leg while he is behind the Sacred Curtain doing his yearly duties. It makes a sermon sound real good and makes the preacher sound like he has done alot of studying. This also is not in the Bible anywheres. As a matter of fact unless I am wrong there was never any written documents saying any High Priest died while doing this job. We say things to make the scriptures sound more exciting but we don't need to do that, they are just like God wants them. God Bless you and please keep studying the word and I believe God will bless you. - Jerry
I know it is not in the Bible. My friends think it is and I have tried to explain to them that it can't be. If God is a God who needs us to have a relationship with Him and we with Him, why would He expect us to help ourselves when we have come to him in prayer for help? Wait for His answer and believe He will answer.
We may not know life's answers but we know God, whos knows all. - Judy
Waiting on God---this devotion brings to mind the Bible verse Micah 6:8, "He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." The only way to walk with God is to wait for Him. Then He can lead and show us "the right action at the right time". This is such a challenge for those who think God will not move at their pace. Then there are the other folks who want God to wait on them when He says move and they are reluctant. Yes, trying to live by the Bible is a challenge but God knows best. "Waiting on God is tough, but God's timing is always best for us and for others." So true. - Janice
