Jesus, The Light That Overcomes Darkness

"I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness." - John 12:46

Have you ever been in a situation where the darkness was so powerful that light could not overcome it? I remember touring a cave when all the lights were turned off. I couldn't see a thing. I couldn't see my hand in front of my face! And then the guide simply lit a match--one match--and we could see all over the cave, because darkness cannot overcome the light.

Jesus says He is the light of the world, the embodiment of how to know God and how to live life. You may feel your life is engulfed in darkness. You may feel bewildered at not having discovered the answer to life. Invite Christ into your life and the light will be turned on, no matter how much darkness you've experienced. Life will begin to make sense and you'll be filled with hope and understanding.

Here's more good news. When we do this, Jesus says we can be a light to others by pointing people who are in the dark to the light--the light of Christ.

It is interesting to note that you can introduce light to darkness but not the other way round. In other words, adding a small amount of darkness to light (if you could do that) has virtually no effect. If you add a small amount of light to complete darkness, it will indeed overcome the darkness. - Frits

I love the other references to light in John's Gospel and Epistle:

"This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." John 3:19-21

"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." 1 John 1:5-7 - Rick Y

To get ahead of the scientific crowd and the coments they will make, we understand that darkness is nothing any more than the absence of light. Thus when you cause even a small spark in a dark room for an instance there is light through out the whole room. This is what the devotion is saying, when Christ came into the world the world was dark with sin, but he became the light that would provide the way to the Father. Now that he is gone, bodily, we are to be the ones to show others the way to the Father. So lets continue in the way that Christ has told us to be. He said to "go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature".(Mk 16:15) 16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. This should cause us to want to tell everyone we come in contact with about the love of Jesus. Yes there are those who will reject our witness and we do need to not be ugly to them like they might be to us but we are to love them enough to let them know we are going to pray for them and THEN DO IT, PRAY. God bless all on this beautiful day. - Jerry

Rick Y, Your comment brought to my mind more of John's writing in Revelation about the new Jerusalem. Chapter 21:verses 22-25. "I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever by shut, for there will be no night there." I find so much joy in pondering these words about God and Jesus and things to come. - Janice
