Heart Condition

"...Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts..." - Hebrews 3:15

I once read about a head coach in the NBA who drifted from God. He was dabbling in Buddhism, Zen, and other different things. He told a reporter that when he went back to his father's church, at times it felt like the preacher was preaching directly at him with a message about the need to repent and to be saved through Jesus Christ.

The reporter asked, "Well, how did you respond?"

He said, "Well, I just hardened my heart until the service was over."

I cringed when I read that. It's such an honest, graphic description of how the majority of the world responds to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Many just harden their heart one more time because they're more interested in doing their own thing than in following God. But the Bible tells us, "Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts".

I urge you, don't harden your heart again. Instead, choose to trust Christ and follow Him today and forever more.

This devotion about hardened hearts is so timely for Passover week. Pharaoh certainly brought troubles to the people of his nation when his heart was hardened. I pray we will never have a leader of our nation whose heart is hardened toward God. - Janice

So true, Janice. It is interesting how the hardening of the heart with those who reject God takes place when God shows them his mercy and grace. It did with the coach Bryant speaks of, who was probably feeling the tug of the Holy Spirit when the preacher was speaking, and with Pharaoh, who would ask Moses to end a plague, only to harden his heart again. - Rick Y

I am praying that some hearts around me will be softened to hear God's word. I get discouraged sometimes, but then I remind myself that nothing is impossible with Christ. - Melanie
